Soul Rot

I was out raking leaves last week and I bumped up against our lighted address post.  The post fell over!  It was buried more than a foot into the ground, but the wood had rotted.  The post looked fine above ground, but it was weak and decayed beneath the ground.

People’s souls can get rotted just like that address post.  We smile and answer “I’m fine” when people ask “how are you?”  but below the surface where no one but God sees, the core of our being is decomposing.

I took the post out of the ground, cut off the rotten part, dug a hole, filled it with concrete, and reset the new post in the concrete.  Our address post is now shorter but healthier.

It made me stop and think of a few times in my life when I’ve ‘surfaced’ some hidden soul decay, confessed it to God and a few other trusted friends, cut of the decayed stuff, and been replanted with new strength.

I thank God for the miracle of confession.  I thank God that I can honestly say today, “It is well with my soul.”
