The Word Was (With) God

Life-spark: A dynamic Trio sings the song of life. (John 1:1-3)

John refers to Jesus as “the Word.” During three years of talking, walking, laughing, living with Jesus, the Word, John became convinced that Jesus was God’s message to us – telling us who He is and what He’s is doing.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1, NIV)

Words are the tools we use to communicate. We start with an idea, then we dress that idea in certain words, so that the person we are talking to or writing to can share the idea with us.

Jesus is the Word that perfectly expresses who God is, what He is thinking, what He is doing, and why He is doing it.

Christians speak of the Father, Son and Spirit as the “Trinity.” The term is not in the Bible, but the idea runs all through scripture. God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit; three in one. Is He three, or one? The answer is “yes.”

In terms of the Trinity, if Jesus is ‘the Word’ what is the Father and what is the Spirit? God the Father is the Speaker, the source of the idea. Jesus is the Word, the expression of the idea. The Spirit is the breath, the air that carries the spoken word. A speaker. Words. Breath. The Eternal Trio tells the story of Life.

How can “the Word” be “with God” and also be “God?” It’s the Trinity. God is totally “true to His word.” Everything He says truthfully expresses Who He is. Jesus is that expression – that message from the very heart and mind of God.

Speaking of ‘words,’ John the author tells us, near the end of his gospel letter, the purpose of His book: But these [words] are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31, NIV)

Life-challenge: Like God, like John, you can use your ideas, your words and your breath to share life and encouragement.  Speak words that edify others today. .
