Who do you see watching you?

We used to sing a song in Sunday School when I was a tot. It said, “There’s a Father up above, and He’s looking down in love.”
Today I read Matthew 23 which recounts Jesus’ scathing denunciation of the teachers of the law and Pharisees (religious leaders of his day). He CAT scanned their hearts, x-rayed their motives, and the picture was ugly: “Everything they do is done for people to see.” (Matthew 23:5). Instead of focusing on what God could see on the inside of them, they focused on their appearance before people.
Part of ‘being alive to God’ is being aware that God sees your heart, your inner person, your motives (hidden or not). These full time religionists were disconnected from God, living ‘before people’ instead of living ‘before God.’
I used to look up in the stands in basketball games and see if my dad was there. Who is my audience of significance these days? Who are you living before, trying to please? God or man?
